The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey

 

This book is actually very uniquely and confusedly told. We mainly follow our Heroine's POV, Cassie, however, the book is split up into different parts, so each part would sometimes start with a different POV. It definitely added depth into this world.

 

 

Burn for Burn by Jenny Han and Siobhon Vivian

 

This story follows 3 separate girls whose lives intertwine as they all go out for revenge on the people who's hurt them the most. It's brilliant and vividly done.

 

 

Exquisite Captive by Heather Demetrios

 

A unique fantasy story about Jinni's. The story is a little confusing as we follow our main Heroine's POV, the POV of the Jinni who is after her, her masters and the guy who's come there for help. It's gorgeous written though.

 

 

A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness

 

This is mainly told in Diana's POV, but we do get some of the story from her possessive, Vampire husband Matthew. A gorgeous tale with magic and history weaved through each page.

 

 

Attachments by Rainbow Rowell

 

This story follows 3 people. We get to know Lincoln through his story, but we get to know Jen and Beth through their hilarious emails. It's a wonderful story that reads like a movie.

Review: The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey

REVIEW

 

I had heard such amazing things about The 5th Wave, but my hesitance towards reading about Aliens really worried me. I'm not exactly a Sci-fi liker, not too bothered about them really, so I was completely surprised by how much I loved this book.

 

At first I was left confused because us readers aren't exactly sure what's going on, it was mysterious and creepy, and just a little exciting. Cassie isn't a new character in YA fiction, she follows a line after Katniss Everdeen, Tris Prior and Clary Fray. But the difference between Cassie and Katniss is that Cassie is extremely likeable. She's kick-ass, but still has the understand undertone. She knows loss, she knows life.

 

Rick Yancey's writing is extremely beautiful and detailed and I found myself adapting his writing style to my own writing, which is something that only happens once in a while, mostly in a good book. He writes so well, with the description that isn't too much or too little. He's mastered it perfectly. In fact, that's what I loved so much: there was something for everyone. However, I had one big problem with the story that knocked the book down by .5 stars. Insta-love. No reader likes Insta-love. No one. And while I liked both Evan and Cassie together, I also hated the way they fell in love. It wasn't just quick, it was extremely quick. I still ship Evan and Cassie though.

 

I honestly cannot recommend this book enough, and there's a movie coming out with Chloe Grace Moretz starring as Cassie. I cannot wait, it's going to be action packed and definitely a box office hit. It hits cinemas in January 2016.

Top 5 Wednesday: Halloween Recommendations

Top 5 Wednesday was set up by Lainey over at GingerReadsLainey. Every week you have a new topic and you pick your top 5 choices for each topic. This is done in Vlogs, but I think it will be great for Bloggers to do as well. Today's topic is Top 5 Halloween Book Recommendations. This week is the official day that Halloween takes place, so it seems fitting that I get to recommend some creepy reads.

FIFTH PLACE: The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey.

This isn't so much of a scary read, but it's definitely a bit creepy and it's all about an Alien invasion. When I was reading this book I just could not put it down and I continued to read even though I was a little freaked out. The pacing of the book matches the pace of Halloween and it's turning into a movie, so it's also the perfect time to read the book before the movie gets released in 2016.





FOURTH PLACE: Angelfall by Susan EE.

Once again, we are joined by the end of the world. Only this time it's being taken over by fallen angels. Angellfall is an intense and quite short apocalypse book that features a crazy-ass character who you'll be shocked by what she does. You're also drawn into the world that is nothing like ours. It's short sentenced and intense. The absolute perfect Halloween read.



THIRD PLACE: Alice in Zombieland by Gena Showalter.

I've mentioned this so many times already, but it is seriously
one of my absolute favourite trilogies ever. It's fast-paced, action-packed and has a unique take on Zombies. What you'll be interested in hearing is that this isn't a Zombie-fied retelling of Alice in Wonderland, but it's actually an interpretation. Also Kat is one hell of a hilarious character. The stuff she comes out with is so weird.





SECOND PLACE: Under the Dome by Stephen King.

This is one hell of a book, it's also incredibly big. Over 800 pages in fact. The premise is basically very simple: a dome covers a town and supernatural things are happening. It also features a lot of crazy in the head characters. This is also a TV show, but they're completely different. I will say, I prefer the TV show, but that's because of Barbie and his beautiful face.




FIRST PLACE: The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare.

You're probably thinking, The Mortal Instruments? Really? Well my answer would be, yes I am serious. The Mortal Instruments is a blend of Fantasy, Paranormal, Action and Adventure. In this delicate world there's Demon hunters, Vampires, Werewolves, Faeries and some scary-as-hell characters. The thing about this series is that it has one of the best conclusions ever. Plus Jace is gorgeous.

Halloween is the time to read a lot of Horror and Paranormal books and I hopefully will do the same, but I'm more of a Horror movies person, because it's better to visual it. Also, nothing scares me, so reading a book would be pointless.

Review:

 

So I just finished this book and I had to immediately come and write up this review because I have so much to say. First off is that I absolutely disliked this book, it was no way near as good as The 5th Wave. Second is that I doubt I will be reading the third book because this book has made me lose interest. How can it go from being one of your favourite series to one you hate? And if I was doing to Taylor Swift Book Tag then this series would be the one to match the song: We are never ever getting back together and I'm in no way sorry because this was terrible!

 

The first one hundred pages dragged on and on and on and on. I felt like it was taking me ages to read and that's not normally a case for me. Some books drag on in place and last for a few pages, but this never seemed to end. Plus nothing happened, like seriously, nothing. I was expecting some sort of tense build up and then something to happen and BAM! That something never came and if I'm being honest, it never came in the entire book.

 

Also Rick Yancey turned this series from Cassie's story to Ringers, who is a new character that I hate. Actually I should take that back because I didn't like any of the new characters a part from Razor, who if I may say is a little too like Evan (We saw hardly any Evan. BOOOOO!).

 

While reading the book all I could think was:

 

Kill Ringer

Kill Ben

Kill Poundcake (He'll never beat Lil' Miss Poundcake from RuPauls Drag Race)

Kill Teacup (WORST. NICK NAME. EVER!)

Just kill them all because they all seemed to be a copycat of the original characters (Cassie, Evan, etc.)

 

While I was reading this short book (which I'm glad was so short because I would've shot myself in the eye if it was any longer) I saw a bunch of reviews from my friends who had enjoyed it and that was because they liked The 5th Wave, but never loved it.

 

There were a few good points about this book and those were Evan and Cassie. I love them so much and they make the story. If this book didn't even have any Evan or Cassie then it would've been a zero starred book because lets be honest, Cassie and Evan are a lot of our favourite couple.

 

However, we saw Cassie and Evan for like fifty pages and then it ended with them, which I'm still annoyed at because like I said: THIS IS CASSIE'S STORY!!

 

Overall, I rated this book a 2.75 out of 5 stars, but my star review may be changed when I have a few moments to calm down.
