BOOKS I WILL NEVER, EVER READ!

So today I felt like talking about books that I will never read. And the reasons will all vary. Maybe I just don't like the author's writing style, or maybe I just think the author is overrated, but I'll leave you guys with my honest opinions. And don't forget, you haven't got to agree with me. We're all human and have difference preferences.


HOLDING UP THE UNIVERSE BY JENNIFER NIVEN

It may seem like I'm bashing the author since I wrote a harsh yet honest review of her debut novel, All the Bright Places. But the honest truth is that I just don't get the hype about Jennifer Niven. Her writing is mediocre at best, but what mainly left me not wanting to read this book was it's original - and highly offensive - synopsis. The original synopsis came across so offensive because it read that Fat people aren't human at all, they're freaks. Not only that it also came across as being skinny gets you places in life, like your weight defines you has a person. And then it comes down to the other main character who has Cognitive Disorder

. What should be described as a serious condition comes across as Jennifer not giving a shit about who reads her story and describes the character as broken. What I've found is that Jennifer likes to label her characters as one thing and nothing else, and it's irritating.

LOOKING FOR ALASKA BY JOHN GREEN

 

I don't need to mention the fact that I happen to think John Green is incredibly overrated. Sure, TFIOS was a somewhat enjoyable read but every time I've tried to read another of his books I get the exact same vibe from them, almost like they characters are carbon copies with different names and looks. And while I guess I could have chosen Paper Towns, I really don't care. Because I won't be reading any of his books. Unless he decides to write something that sounds interesting but I doubt it since he's all about filming the book to movie adaptations of his novels, which sadly I've also not been a fan of. In fact I thought both TFIOS and Paper Towns were some of the worst movies ever, beating Insurgent to the mix (Which seems impossible, highly impossible).

 

 

 

ONE WITH YOU BY SYLVIA DAY

 

I don't understand why she continued this series past a trilogy. For me 3 books was enough of Eva and Gideon. Just like her other readers, I loved them loads but their lives aren't that interesting to be continued over another 2 books. But I also understand why she wrote them: Money. They sell more than well enough, they're incredibly popular and it's even been optioned for TV............Which makes zero sense. But, yeah.....I won't be reading this one either.

REVIEW

 

I'm not sure what to really say about The Fault in Our Stars. It's a world-wide phenomenon, everyone has either read the book or at least watched the movie (Not going to talk about that). When I first read the book I absolutely loved it. I didn't know anything about it, I hadn't watched booktube videos where it was talked about on every channel - good and bad - and I certainly hadn't known that it was loved by everyone. I just picked it up because the cover was simple and cute.

 

What John Green manages to do well is create really relatable characters that you fall in love with. Hazel is honest, despite the fact that she has cancer. Augustus is completely full of himself and really witty. He's the type of person who'd do completely embarrassing things just to make the other person smile. And together they make a great team. However, I have my problems.

 

John Green has romanticised a terminal illness and I don't agree with it. Cancer is not something that should be romanticised. At all. It's a serious illness - which was very well researched - that changes lives. It can destroy not just a person, but that persons entire family. That doesn't mean that I think people with terminal illness can't find or fall in love, because they can. It's me saying that I am not a fan of it.

 

But despite all that, I actually did enjoy the book. I've read it twice, (The first time I didn't know about the hype) the second time I did know about it and it affected my views. John Green's writing isn't phenomenal; it's simple and fast-paced but enjoyable. The conclusion of the book was very predictable. It's a story about 2 teenagers with terminal illnesses, what else do you expect to happen?

 

Would I recommend the book? Yes. It's a quick, fun read with a sad ending. But that's it. It's not life changing, nor is it eye-opening. It's just an okay read.

Burn for Burn by Jenny Han and Shiobhan Vivian

 

This book is 350 pages long and I read it within Two hours. It's a very fun, fast-paced read that tells the story of Three high school girls who are out for revenge on the people who have done them wrong. Despite being a YA Contemporary there is a hint of supernatural in the trilogy as well, which is very well done.

 

 

Beautiful Disaster by Jamie McGuire

 

This is one of those books that capture your attention from the first page, not because it's amazingly well written, but because it's seriously entertaining and filled with drama. Abby and Travis' relationship is seriously intense!

 

 

Make You Mine by Macy Beckett

 

Back last year I had a serious case of a reading slump that lasted 3 entire months. In that time I read One book, and that was Make You Mine. I read it all within Four hours and I had such a fun time while reading it. It's definitely a unique take on the adult romance book.

 

 

The Fault in Our Stars by John Green

 

I'm pretty sure everybody read this book in One entire sitting. The story hooks on to your heart and doesn't let go until the last page, when you then realise that you can't see anything out of your eyes because you're crying do damn hard. Or if you're like me, then you're throwing the book down onto the bed and crying into your pillow like you have no idea how to live. For Three WHOLE days!

 

 

Confess by Colleen Hoover

 

It was impossible not to read this book in One sitting. I was crying within Ten pages and wanted to know what was going to happen for Auburn, within 5 hours I had completed the book, placed it onto my shelf and continued sobbing my too-big-of-a-heart out. It's a heartbreaker that's for sure!

Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick

 

My edition is signed by Becca since I met her last year in November, but I honestly have no desire to read it, or her other book Black Ice. The premise of Hush, Hush isn't something I like, but maybe one day I will give it a try, but I doubt it.

 

 

Looking for Alaska & Paper Towns by John Green

 

Honestly? I just dislike John Green's writing style and characters. They're always the same and I actually think he has zero idea how to write a decent, likeable character. I'd rather leave those two alone and dose them with petrol and set them alight.

 

 

Dirty Deeds by Karina Halle

 

I will never pick up another book by Karina Halle. I read Dirty Angels and was completely offended by it all. Her writing wasn't anything special either. Just no, no, no, no, no!

 

 

This Girl by Colleen Hoover

 

Slammed should have been a stand-a-lone. I honestly don't know why Colleen wrote 3 books when there wasn't a storyline in Point of Retreat, so to continue it with This Girl makes completely no sense.

Top 10 Books I Want To Re-Read

This week I've decided to take part in Top 10 Tuesday, however, I won't be doing a post every week. My Top 10 Tuesday posts may be twice a month or just when a topic comes around that I like, especially since I take part in Top 5 Wednesday as well. Top 10 Tuesday is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.

This weeks topic is Top 10 Books you want to Re-read and mine was very easy because I have a list of books I plan to re-read. So...lets get on with it!

 

The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices by Cassandra Clare - Lady Midnight comes out next year, so I want to re-read both series so that they're both fresh in my mind. I probably won't read The Bane Chronicles because it comes out this month.

Prisoner of Night and Fog by Anne Blankman - I read this this year, but due to a reading slump I couldn't enjoy it as much as I could've. I loved the first half - an easy 5 stars - but the second half didn't satisfy my slump.

A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness - I always read this trilogy every year and will do until I get old and can't read anything.

The Host by Stephenie Meyer - I love this book so much, but we'll never know if the sequel is coming, so this is my best bet on satisfying my craving.

Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell - I read this in December last year, so it seems fitting to re-read it soon.

Ugly Love by Colleen Hoover - I was in a reading slump while reading this book and I never got out of it what others did, so when I re-read it I hope to see what it was all about.

The Dark Heroine by Abigail Gibbs - I read this book about two years ago and I need to re-read it so I can move onto the sequel.

The Fault in Our Stars by John Green - Both times of reading this book gave me different rating. When I first picked it up I gave it 5 stars, but the second time I read it I only rated it four stars. Hopefully a third time will show me what I really think of the book.

Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins - Need I say more? Paris, cute boys and Paris.

Ps, if it does happen let me be in Dauntless.



THIRD PLACE: Jennifer Echols for Pushing the Limits by Katie McGarry

"McGarry details the sexy highs, the devastating lows and the real work it takes to build true love." Love is something that needs to be worked on every day. There is always something that challenges you and in this book Echo and Noah defied the odds and showed everyone what a real relationship is. It's not about popularity or sex. It's about overcoming each and every challenge together.




SECOND PLACE: John Green for Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell

"Reminded me not just what it's like to be young and in love with a girl, but what it's like to be young and in love with a book." Everything is perfect with this blurb apart from the girl part - it'd be boy for me - Eleanor and Park is a book you can fall in love over and over again with. It's beautifully written with flawed, diverse characters. It's exactly what the YA community needed. Two people are aren't afraid to stand out.




FIRST PLACE: Lindsay Cummings for Slated by Teri Terry

"Everything I have been looking for in a book: suspense, mind-bending mystery, romance and just the right amount of Science-Fiction." We all know that Lindsay Cummings likes the darker side of books. But I have to completely agree with her on this one. This book had me on the edge of my seat. I was turning the pages faster than I would eating a bar of chocolate. I was addicted.





I'm always asked what my favourite quote is from Divergent and I always reply with that I have too many because the book is so addictive. But I do have a favourite from it and I'm going to show you it in the form of a GIF. A Theo James shirtless GIF. Enjoy!
